The Interpersonal Internet

Internet research has often focused on individuals or groups; in 
contrast, dyadic interpersonal relationships have received relatively 
scant attention. Yet an emerging body of evidence suggests that one 
of the Internet's primary appeals is its ability to facilitate 
relational development and maintenance. While this effect has been 
documented, we know very little about the actual formation and 
maintenance of relationships in and around online contexts. This 
special issue of the Electronic Journal of Communication will 
spotlight interpersonal relationships and the Internet. We welcome 
work from any research tradition that offers new findings based on 
well-grounded research and that relates those findings to existing 
knowledge where appropriate. Submissions are invited that address 
questions such as (but by no means limited to):

    How are relationships developed face-to-face maintained, 
negotiated, or transformed through the Internet?
    How is Internet use situated in offline interpersonal relational contexts?
    How do relationships develop within online contexts?
    How do differences amongst Internet contexts and forms give rise 
to differences in interpersonal relationships or communication 
strategies?

Manuscripts should be prepared following guidelines of the American 
Psychological Association (4th ed.).  Authors should be careful to 
remove all personal references from the manuscript to allow for blind 
review.  Manuscripts must be submitted electronically.  After 
acceptance both a hard copy and an electronic copy will be required. 
Deadline for the receipt of manuscripts is September 1, 2001. 
Authors are invited to discuss possible contributions with the Guest 
Editor prior to submission.
