Replying, including a message, is often useful in personal messages to
provide context.

It is never useful to include a digest in a reply. A summary of what
you're replying about will do (and include note taking skills;-)

My guess is that people reply including the whole digest out of sheer,
unthinking habit. Reply is often the default.
