NOTICE OF VACANCY

Position:

The Department invites applications for a tenure track position as
Assistant Professor in an appropriate department, with primary teaching in
the Electronic Media and Culture program on the Vancouver branch campus
located in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area, beginning August 2002.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and
graduate classes with a 2-2 (with an academic year consisting of two
semesters) teaching load, pursue an active research agenda, and engage in
service activities for the department, university, and community.

We seek a qualified candidate to teach in the interdisciplinary B.A.
program in Electronic Media and Culture, a liberal arts-based curriculum
exploring relationships between technology and meaning-making both in
contemporary and historical contexts.

Washington State University is a multi-campus comprehensive land grant
institution with a commitment to undergraduate and graduate instruction,
research and extension.  The Vancouver campus (est. 1989) offers upper
division undergraduate and graduate instruction for the southwest area of
the state.  It is a rapidly growing campus, with a current enrollment of
1,600 expected to grow to 6,000 in the coming years.

Qualifications:

ABD or terminal degree in appropriate field required. Discipline open,
with special consideration given to candidates with proven national
research profile in digital technology as social practice and teaching
experience in higher education.  Concentrations might include information
architecture, media studies, artificial intelligence, hypermedia learning
and/or digital research, among other fields.

Rank and Salary:

The appointment is at the Assistant Professor rank, in an appropriate
department.  The salary is competitive and commensurate with
qualifications and experience.

A panel proposed for the American Studies Association annual convention,
Houston, TX, November 14-17, 2002

The language associated with new media and connected cultural and economic
forces derives almost exclusively from English (the "World Wide Web" is a
most obvious example). This panel seeks to explore the cultural contexts
surrounding the global dissemination of the language of new media. What
associations are implicit in the terms concerning information
technologies? How does the terminology circumscribe the use of new media
technologies? What are the cultural, political, social and economic
ramifications of the spread of this language within and beyond U.S.
borders?
