Dear Pete -

Here's a geography book - an unusual, interesting and
small book that may inform some of your framework for
analysing modelling -

Wood, Denis. (1993). The power of maps. New York,
Guilford Press.

Two classics:
Tufte, E. (1983). The visual display of quantitative
information.
Tufte, E. (1990). Envisioning information. Cheshire,
CT, Graphics Press.

There's a very very interesting guy in Canada named
Alan Thomson working with the Canadian Forest Service
on how to ethically model the First Nation's use of
their native lands, especially forest lands:
athomson at pfc.cfs.nrcan.gc.ca
Here's his paper: Thomson & Schmoldt, 2001, "Ethics in
computer software design and development" Computers
and Electronics in Agriculture 30(2001) 85-102,
Elesevier Press.

I believe a polite email would get a good response.
He's not so much into GIS as analytical modelling
(Simile, a clone of Stella). Tell him Denise Rall
referred you.

Good luck! Denise
