[Air-l] Summer Computer Institute at Michigan Tech, June 17-28

Colleagues:

We have a limited number of seats left in our annual summer institute on
computers--Computers in Writing-Intensive Classrooms (CIWIC), 17-28 June
2002. We cordially invite interested faculty and graduate students to
apply as soon as possible to ensure a reservation for this summer.

Guest speakers for this year's institute include Gail Hawisher, Jim
Porter, Pam Takayoshi, Scott DeWitt, Ellen Cushman, Kris Blair, Sean
Williams, Jeff Grabill, and Johndan Johnson Eilola.

In its seventeenth year of continuous operation, CIWIC provides a space
for individuals to explore the meaningful integration of technology and
new media into composition programs and classrooms.

During the two-weeks of this institute, participants can

· enhance the range and scope of their own digital/electronic literacy
and their departmental leadership in this area;
· formulate computer-rich assignments that retain humanistic goals and
scope;
· design and evaluate computer-supported writing facilities that support
a range of faculty and students, explore a range of lab-management
issues;
· shape curricula that make effective use of computer technology without
ignoring the needs of human beings;
· use synchronous and asynchronous composition and conferencing
software, web design tools, digital still and video cameras, image and
video editing software, audio recorders, and the World Wide Web to
support effective instruction;
· explore current scholarship and define research projects in computers
and composition; gain critical theoretical and practical perspective in
this area.


The CIWIC institute consists of 10 six-hour days with optional lunch and
evening sessions.  Tuition for the institute is $1250.00 (meals and
lodging not included).  A limited number of partial scholarships ($750)
are available for scholars from under-represented groups.

The institute is conducted in a state-of-the-art computer facility
(Michigan Tech's Center for Computer-Assisted Language
Instruction--CCLI). In addition to attending regularly scheduled
sessions, participants have 24-hour access to the lab/classroom for
additional explorations and practice. Cynthia Selfe, Gail Hawisher, Anne
Wysocki, Richard Selfe, and a team of knowledgeable student consultants
provide one-on-one instruction-on both Macintosh and IBM platforms-in
developing and using applications suited for participants' own
classrooms and Writing/English programs. All participants receive three
semester-hours of graduate credit.

Participants need have no previous computer knowledge; individualized
instruction will be provided. At the same time, participants who do have
extensive experience with computers will find plenty of  challenges and
room to explore within the framework of the workshop. Participants from
all educational levels are encouraged to attend. For additional
