For IM, you might also want to look at the various applications in Unix -
talk, ytalk, ntalk, wall, etc., that allowed instant communication. Not to
mention IRC, but I believe that was later. I think of Unix as relatively
porous for cross-communication; for example in the panix.com shell you can
type 'hey <username>' for messaging across terminals - Alan
