There is a lot out there - use the ACM's digital library -
www.acm.org - you will able to get the abstracts if not the full papers 
using your local libary

Steve Whittaker on Outeraction
Ellen Isaacs - on sound based IM
Herbsleb on IM in the workplace
Voida on IM message attributes

There is an aweful lot more in that library if you look.
