Re distributed work,
Pamela Hinds and Sara Kiesler have just published a dynamite edited book,
Distributed Work.

As Ben Anderson, there is a huge literature on CSCW (computer supported
cooperative work).

The CSCWers and the AoIRs seem mutually unaware of each other: the CSCW
folks hang around with computer scientists more and both develop
applications and study uses. (Go to their conference mid November and see
for yourself -- check www.acm.org).

One of the reasons I got involved in the next AoIR conference is to try to
get these worthy sets of scholars engaged with each other.
