In my undergraduate level class "Mediated Communication in Society" we
go into a moo and into a 3D graphical chat room. Students then write a
paper on online interaction in those environments compared to other
online interaction, on identity, and community issues.

Does anyone use IRC for student classroom exercises - eg practicals 
of virtual participant observation? If so, I'd be interested in what 
kinds of exercises you set students.
