(This is a translation of an article published in the daily newspaper Kathimerini of 12/9/2002, available at http://www.kathimerini.gr/4dcgi/_w_articles_ell_399640_12/09/2002_37419 )

Internet Cafes v. Government = 1:0. A decision of the criminal courts of Thessaloniki two days ago held that the law that had banned electronic gaming in public and private places is unconstitutional, under the rationale that it is contravening article 5 of the Hellenic Constitution pertaining to the Free Movement of Ideas. With the same decision two owners and one employee of Internet Cafés that had been arrested under the said unconstitutional law were found not guilty. According to all indications, the next step will be an attempt to overturn the controversial law before the Hellenic Conseil d’Etat, i.e. the supreme administrative court of the Hellenic Republic, but also before the European Court.
