This may be a bit peripheral, but Arjun Appadurai has looked media and 
national/local identities in the context of globalization. Try his book:

Appadurai, Arjun. (1996) Modernity at Large: Cultural Dimensions of 
Globalization, University of Minnesota Press, Minneapolis.
