Colleagues:

I'm sorry to report that Walter Ong, S.J. whose book "Orality and  
Literacy" influenced many scholars' thinking about technology and  
language, died Tuesday.

As recently as this spring, Ong was reviewing manuscripts for the  
Quarterly Journal of Speech, a testament to his commitment to  
scholarship and the pursuit of knowledge.
