Fellowships in Technology, Institutions and Governance

2003-2004

The National Center for Digital Government Research and Practice (NCDG)
(www.ksg.harvard.edu/digitalcenter) is offering a small number of
pre-doctoral residential fellowships to support dissertation research in
the area of technology, institutions, and governance.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants should be nominated by their department or program and submit a
letter of support from a department head or program chair. The Center
offers pre-doctoral fellowships for U.S. citizens for one year, with a
possibility for renewal. Applications for pre-doctoral fellowships are
welcome from those students who have passed their general examinations
prior to appointment. The Center encourages applications from a range of
disciplines and fields bearing on information, technology, institutions,
and governance. The Center also encourages applications from women and
minorities.

Fellows are expected to devote some portion of their time to collaborative
endeavors, as arranged by the appropriate program or project director.
Pre-doctoral research fellows are expected to contribute to the Center's
research activities, as well as work on - and ideally complete - their
doctoral dissertations.

STIPEND INFORMATION

The National Center for Digital Government offers ten-month stipends of
$20,000 to pre-doctoral research fellows. Only a limited number of
fellowships are available, so interested candidates are encouraged to apply
for other sources of funding. All applicants should indicate clearly
whether they are seeking full or partial funding from NCDG, and indicate
other potential funding sources. In most cases, office space and supplies,
computers with LAN and Internet connections, and access to Harvard
University libraries and other facilities will be provided. NCDG
pre-doctoral fellowships are supported by the National Science Foundation
under the auspices of the National Center .

APPLICATION PROCEDURES and CONTACT INFORMATION

Each applicant should submit as one complete packet:

1. a 3 to 5 page double-spaced statement summarizing the dissertation
prospectus, including its relevance to the research interests of one of the
National Center; 2. a curriculum vitae; 3. 3 sealed letters of
recommendation (not emails) attesting to the applicant's scholarly promise
and professional competence; 4. a short writing sample pertinent to the
application; 5. a sealed graduate school transcript.

There is no physical application to fill out. The steps above constitute
the application process. The applicant is responsible for collecting all
materials, including letters of recommendation and transcripts and
submitting them as one packet to the Center. Materials submitted will not
be returned to the applicant. Emailed materials will not be accepted,
unless specifically indicated by the Fellowship Coordinator.

The application deadline is March 1, 2003. Late applications will not be
accepted.
