"The Metaphysical Touch" by Sylvia Brownrigg (1998)
Picador USA. There's also a UK edition reprinted in
1999.

Best book on Kant and email that I have ever read! Not
so much the develoment of a community, but the
protagonist does join an online group after her PhD
thesis on Kant burns up in the 1994 Berkeley fires.
