New Ph.D. Program in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media
North Carolina State University is accepting applications for its new
doctoral program in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media (CRDM).
Prospective students who have earned a master’s degree in a relevant
field can apply now through February 1 for fall 2005 admission.
Built on the premise that new developments in communication media and
information technologies require a dramatic shift in instruction and
research, this program integrates the study of oral, written, and
visual communication to focus on the human dimensions of information
and communication technologies. The degree is a collaboration between
the departments of Communication and English in NC State’s College of
Humanities and Social Sciences.
Students will take interdisciplinary core courses taught by research
faculty from Communication and English. They will also define an
elective area of specialization and gain a foundation in qualitative
and quantitative research. A highlight of this program is its emphasis
on professional preparation, which includes mentored teaching
experience, a course in digital pedagogy, and a colloquium devoted to
professional issues and practices.
Departments of Communication and English are advertising for faculty
who can bring technology specializations to positions in composition
studies, media studies, rhetoric, organizational communication,
technical communication, writing and speaking across the curriculum,
and other areas, and graduates of this program will help meet that
demand. In addition, graduates may join industry, government, and
non-profit organizations where professionals are needed to conduct
research, manage technological development, and analyze policy related
to new communication technologies.
