*Abstract:
Mr Ess reviews basic issues in research ethics from a variety of
traditions and locations - including the U.S., the U.K., the E.U., and
Scandinavia - with a focus on recent efforts to develop international
ethical guidelines for research (both in the humanities and the social
sciences), including Internet research, that seek to bridge or harmonize
cultural differences, for example, through efforts to identify "first
principles" (e.g., of human subjects protection, data privacy, etc.)
that are then applied / interpreted in the specific context of diverse
national/ethic traditions ("ethical pluralism").
