The first time I saw "thread/threading" studied in the computer science 
literature was in the following article:

Lewis, D.L., & Knowles, K.A. (1997). Threading electronic mail: A 
preliminary study. Information Processing & Management, vol. 33, no. 2, 
pp. 209-217.
