Some of the more advanced MUDs have for many years had such options as 
"ask" or "none of your business" or "prefer not to say" under gender.

With regard to sexual orientation one of our local youth groups has 
adopted the abbreve LGBU, I do not know how widespread this is: Lesbian, 
Gay, Bisexual or Undecided.
