Applicants should hold a PhD in sociology or a related field, be able to demonstrate excellent research achievement, and have relevant teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Department of Sociology seeks to appoint a Reader as from September 1st 2005. Applicants should hold a PhD in sociology or a related field, be able to demonstrate excellent research achievement, and have relevant teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  The person appointed would be expected to contribute to the department?s dynamic, interdisciplinary research culture (6* RAE rating) (see http://www.comp.lancs.ac.uk/sociology/). 

 

Research

The successful candidate will be expected to enhance further the creative research  culture of the Department and of the Faculty. This will include organising research events, seminars, workshops and conferences; making bids individually and/or with colleagues for funded research; and attracting PhD students.  The candidate will also be expected to publish widely, including articles in leading journals in the field and monographs with prominent academic publishers, and to participate in national and international research events at Lancaster and elsewhere. 

 
Teaching

The person appointed will teach on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the department and beyond, depending on their areas of expertise.  Teaching obligations will comprise an appropriate mix of activities drawn from the following:

·        Contributing a 5-10 week block (10-20 lectures) to the first year Sociology course (Soc 101) in their area of expertise;

·        Devising and teaching a 10-20 week undergraduate option in the area of their research;

·        Devising and teaching a 10 week MA module in the area of their research;

·        Contributing to consortial core course teaching in the Department at undergraduate and Master?s Levels;

·        Contributing to the Social Science Faculty Training Programme for PhD students;

·        Attracting and supervising PhD students (optionally with a second supervisor) to successful completion.

 
Administration

The person appointed will be expected to take on administration as agreed with the Head of Department annually. This will involve working with colleagues, liaising with assistant staff, attending Departmental, Faculty and/or University Committees and contributing to relevant documentation.
 
The Department of Sociology at Lancaster University

The Department has a strong tradition of interdisciplinary, collaborative research.  Current members have intellectual backgrounds in sociology, economics, politics, social anthropology and cultural studies, film studies and science and technology studies, and most have extensive interdisciplinary links across the University.  The Department co-operates closely with a number of Institutes in the Faculty, particularly the Institute for Advanced Studies, the Institute for Women?s Studies and the Institute for Cultural Research, and the Institute for Environmental Philosophy and Public Policy.  The Centre for Science Studies is also administered from within the Sociology Department.  Recent appointments have included researchers from the US, the UK, Canada, India and Denmark. Staff in the Department publish on a wide range of interdisciplinary topics, including:

    * political economy, the state, class structures
    * mobilities and spatialities
    * social theory, globalisation, time/space and materiality
    * consumption, leisure and tourism
    * ethnicity, diaspora, post-colonialism and multi-culturalism
    * culture and identity
    * gender and sexualities

    * sociology of science, technology and the environment
    * feminist science studies
    * the body, medicine and health, and new reproductive technologies
    * film and media
    * organisations, computer supported cooperative work, technology studies

 

The Sociology Department offers the major degree, BA Sociology, and combined BA degrees:  Sociology with Criminology, Educational Studies, Geography, Philosophy, Politics, Religious Studies, Social History, Film, and Organisation, Work & Technology. 

 

The Department convenes or contributes to several degrees at the MA level:

There are currently over 60 part-time and full-time research students (MPhil and PhD) in the Department who participate in the research events as well as in the undergraduate teaching programmes.  The Department also has a substantial number of visiting post-doctoral scholars and research fellows.
