Call for Papers for Refereed Proceedings
(Submission deadline: 15 July 2006)
FOR ONLINE SUBMISSION: http://www.sjc.uq.edu.au:9999/

September 22-24, 2006
Brisbane, Australia
THE mass media and journalism are going through radical transformations.
Technological innovations, evolving political conditions and economic models
are all challenging the industry around the world. Because of this, the
School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Queensland is
seeking submissions for the international conference Journalism: Now and
into the Future. Papers reflecting diverse theoretical and practical
perspectives are encouraged.

The conference Journalism: Now and Into the Future attempts to bridge the
gap between the academic world of communication and that of the media. Since
journalism encompasses a range of situations and environments, we seek to
hear from scholars and practitioners about journalists' work situations and
journalists as a social group. We look for papers which address diversity in
media output and the relationship between truth and journalistic
representation. We seek new thoughts on self-reflection among media
practitioners, the consequences for contemporary citizenship, and evolving
methodological approaches which map and evaluate the changing media
environment. Topic areas canvassing, but not necessarily limited to, the
following areas are invited:

* Civic Journalism: A vector for development and change
* The relationship between journalists and their audiences in different
cultural environments
* The Political Economy of 21st century news media
* Journalism: reporting nation-states or the global scene
* The Industrial Complex: Reflections from industry practitioners
* Audiences
* Gender
* Race & Ethnicity
* Class
* Issues in New Media
* Spin: What journalism swallows.
