The term was coined by Jeff Hadden. Here's a list of his works, many of
which will be of interest to you, and a number of which are offered in

Asides: Hadden, who was on my Master's thesis committee, has been labelled a
"cult apologist" for focusing his final 15 years (before passing in January
2003) charaterizing new religious movements (esp. Scientology and the
Unification Church) without value-laden critique. Despite his employment of
pscychological ideas in lectures (he often castigated me publicly for
adhering to Pure Sociology), he was a steadfastly scientific, and deserves
being remembered for that. And his earlier work, on church organization and
mass media, is similarly remarkable.
