We used to do it with serial cables... and parallel-port-based "Laplink" 
cables (thank you Traveling Software...).

They do, but fragmentation is no longer usually the reason.  Dozens or 
hundreds of abandoned, outdated, unused configuration files or registry 
entries often are....
