Peter,
When asking questions about the background of the founder of
Wikipedia, it might be prudent to keep in mind that Jimmy Wales is a
subscriber to this list and phrase your inquiries in appropriately
neutral terms.

The answer to this question is that Wales made the money that enabled
him to start Wikipedia working on a portal/directory site (something
like Yahoo's directory) that included among other sites listings of
porn sites but was not itself porn.
