Special Issue:
New Technologies and Interaction: Contradiction or Symbiosis?

Most studies of technology have been written by media scholars (for
obvious reasons). However, this special issue is designed instead to
come from the viewpoint of language and social interaction scholars. LSI
scholars take for granted the use of audio and video recording of
behavior as tools but rarely stop to discuss what they are doing and the
logic underlying specific choices. The central question guiding this
special issue is this: how do LSI scholars use various new technologies?
It is, of course, uniquely appropriate that discussion of this topic
should appear in an electronic journal, where examples of such
technologies can be linked to the articles.

A wide variety of technologies permitting more than the obvious audio
and video recording of behavior are now available for the study of LSI.
Some scholars use technology in their own research, while others use it
in teaching students how to conduct research, or for moving beyond
text-based presentations of research results. DVDs, CDs, the internet,
digital video cameras, iPods, Wikis, PowerPoint and integrated
presentation software are among the growing list of tools used to
enhance the work of interaction scholars. It is time to pause and
evaluate what we already know works in particular contexts, and
determine what else we need to learn.

Because interaction scholars not only conduct research, but also teach,
and present their research results (whether to students or peers), this
special issue will include any and all of these topics. Introductions to
the use of specific technologies are appropriate, as are case studies of
best practices (and worst practices, so we all can learn what did NOT
work for someone else). 

The special issue is scheduled for publication in Fall 2009.  Deadline
for completed manuscripts is August 1, 2008.  Submissions should be
electronic (.doc or .rtf format) and must conform to the specifications
of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th
ed. Place author's contact information in an email to the editor only,
not on the title page of the submission.
