Dear Dr Humer -
This book might be helpful:
Draaisma, Dowe. (2001). Metaphors of Memory: a history of the mind. Cambridge, UK, Cambridge University Press.
He is a Dutch scholar who considers the relationship between memory and static photo images in a very deep way. At least I would look at his research and his bibliography.
Cheers, Denise
