hi Ben,
we have an early study of seniors' use of the internet (in those days  
-- early 1990s -- there was a lot of 'social networking' online  
through localized newsgroups and listservs and  access was provided by  
Virginia Tech's Blacksburg Electronic Village project since the  
network was still controlled by NSF) published in:

Casalegno, Federico, 2000, BEV Seniors, In A. Cohill and A. Kavanaugh  
(Eds.), Community Networks: Lessons from Blacksburg, Virginia.  
Norwood, MA: Artech House.
