Hi, Christopher,
I've found Nathan Ensmenger's and Michael Mahoney's work very helpful in understanding the social history of computing.
Michael Mahoney's webpage lists articles he wrote on the history of computing: http://www.princeton.edu/~mike/computing.html
Sadly, he is recently deceased.
You can find Ensmenger's publications here:
http://web-facstaff.sas.upenn.edu/~nathanen/publications/
He has a new book coming out I *think* with MIT Press, but it's not announced yet on the MIT Press site.
Good luck with your work!
-Annette
