I post my pictures on Flickr and if my images would be pulled (which would
not be the case given your research topic) I would like that permission was
asked beforehand. Otherwise to me it is like opening a Pandora's box.

To give you a simple case many of us post under all rights reserved and only
today I saw this

Looks like the Independent pulled some images and some people of course did
not like it. In your case at least there is no commercial use but still
there is no harm in asking beforehand if that is feasible for you.

I don't think photographic quoting makes sense because you would probably
not quote a small part of the picture as under fair use. But then this is
just my opinion.
