Dear all,

I'm in complete sympathy with Steve's call that we keep costs in line and
let folks allow for planning ahead, as well as keeping costs as reasonable
as possible for graduate students (and faculty too). Here are a few of the
things that we kept foremost in our minds as we planned this conference:

1. AoIR is international and we have a commitment to serving all of our
members. Part of that includes moving our conference around, to offer
different groups the opportunity to attend more easily in certain years.
2. As part of that commitment, we knew that Sweden would be expensive, but
we felt we needed to go back to Europe after holding the conference in the
US in 2009. Due in part to our great success in Milwaukee (with a huge thank
you to Steve for that), we are able to help finance this conference. Even
with the higher registration fees, we will most likely be incurring a loss
as an organization to support this conference.
3. A smaller matter, but lunches for the three days of the conference are
included in this year's registration cost (they weren't included in
Milwaukee). We included them so that attendees didn't have to run out during
a brief lunch break to find food, and could more easily continue the
conversations that had started during the day. Thus, some of the cost of
purchasing meals on your own is offset by that.
4. We are still looking for sites for 2012 and 2013! If maintaining certain
cost levels is important, please consider helping us host a conference and
work towards that goal. We can only go where we are invited.

All the best,

Mia
