(The second call for a casebook, which is the
second book on Open Innovation and SMEs to be
edited by the undersigned. However, if you have a
prospective manuscript on theoretical aspects,
which the first book covers, we have space for a few chapters.)

Introduction
Recent years have seen a paradigm shift in
operational and management aspects of successful
entrepreneurship and value addition within an
enterprise. They have been shifted from simple
introduction of new ideas and product development
to collaborative nature of innovation, in terms
of products, processes and services. Innovation
has been transformed into open innovation rather
than closed innovation, which seems more
traditional. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
play a critical role in this transformation of
innovation strategies for business promotion,
value gain and economic empowerment of a country.
However, little is known on how open innovation
is implemented in SMEs and what are the challenges and benefits associated.
Overall Objective of the Book
By incorporating academic, entrepreneurial,
institutional, research, and empirical cases,
this book will bring together knowledge on how
SMEs can apply open innovation strategies to SME
development, and empowering these enterprises to
act as a catalyst for the economic empowerment of
a country (developed, developing, transitional
and under-developed). This book will ascertain
diverse aspects of policy issues, economic
issues, cultural issues, including numerous
opportunities and challenges surrounding open
innovation strategies; study relevant risks and
risk management; analyze SMEs evolution pattern
on adopting open innovation strategies through
available measurable criteria; provide
suggestions or recommendations along these
contexts rehearsing possible operational
scenarios; and assist practitioners to gain
knowledge in designing action plans to empower
SMEs in reaching out the grass roots communities
utilizing open innovation strategies.
Target Audience
The target group dealing with SMEs development
through open innovation strategies may
accommodate the entire community of a country,
ranging from government or policy initiators;
entrepreneurs and enterprises; researchers,
practitioners and academics; users and
intermediaries. Hence, the potential audience of
this book will consist of all these stakeholders
of an economy. Furthermore, on regional and
global scenarios, this book will target
development partners, agencies and their mediators.
Recommended topics for chapters include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Cases on open innovation management,
- Open innovation models and processes,
- Technology supported cases on open innovation,
- Co-creation of sustained platforms for SMEs,
- Studying, analyzing or evaluating success cases,
- Innovation in marketing and communication,
- Application of strategies in entrepreneurial ventures and IPR
- Operation, legal interpretation and legislation aspects
- Socio-economic impact and implications of open innovation in SMEs,
- Knowledge creation and collaboration among various actors, and
- Cases illustrating risks and crisis management.
Submission Procedure
Researchers and practitioners are invited to
submit on or before July 15, 2010, a 2-3 page
proposal clearly explaining the mission and
concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors
of accepted proposals will be notified by July
30, 2010 about the status of their proposals and
sent case guidelines. Full cases are expected to
be submitted by September 30, 2010. All submitted
cases will be reviewed on a double-blind review
basis. Contributors may also be requested to
serve as reviewers for this project.

This book is scheduled to be published by IGI
Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of
the Information Science Reference (formerly

Science Reference, and IGI Publishing
