Digital Diasporas:
Migration, ICTs and Transnationalism
January 13 -14 2011
Convener: Mirca Madianou (Department of Sociology and Lucy Cavendish

New developments in digital media combined with a collapse in the cost of
international communication are together transforming the experience of
migration with implications for family life, sociality and intimacy,

presentations, this interdisciplinary conference will assess the impact of
digital media on the following aspects of migration: representation,
visibility and participation; culture and identities; family separation;
social life; patterns of migration and policy implications. The conference
will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the digital and what is new
about new media. The conference is co-funded by CRASSH and the ESRC as part
of the research grant on Migration, ICTs and Transnational families.
