Here in Canada the white hat Linux hacker community is political in a real
sense. Three examples:

They have successfully gotten the Green Party of Canada to adopt open source
and free software as a policy platform. 

One local hacker/open source business person, Russell McOrmund has spent
about two years now attending Canada's copyright reform hearings in
Parliament and given testimony.
