Papers are sought for a series of panels addressing the theme of 
‘Democratisation and New Media’. These papers, from doctoral, 
postdoctoral and academic researchers, will be presented at the Royal 
Irish Academy’s Annual Conference on International Affairs, to be held 
in Academy House, Dublin, on 18 November 2011.

The International Affairs Conference, organised by the Academy’s 
Committee for International Affairs, is the premier conference on 
international studies in Ireland, attracting an audience of students, 
academics, Irish and foreign diplomats and members of the public.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs gives the opening address on an annual 
basis. This speech has often provided the occasion for the delivery of 
an important policy statement on Irish foreign relations. Traditionally, 
papers presented at this conference are considered for inclusion in the 
journal Irish Studies in International Affairs, which is published 
annually by the Academy.

Speakers at previous conferences have included the US Special Envoy to 
the Middle East, Mr George Mitchell, EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, 
Mr Giljs de Vries, EU Commission Director-General for Trade, Mr David 
O’Sullivan, the President and CEO of the International Crisis Group, Mr 
Gareth Evans and more recently, Professor Paul Rogers of Bradford 
University.

This year’s conference will include an address from the Minister for 
Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Eamon Gilmore, TD, who is the incoming 
chair of the Organisation for Security and Co-Operation in Europe (OSCE) 
in 2012. Keynote speakers in the field are also being invited.

Papers are welcome on any aspect of the conference theme. Contributions 
which address aspects of OSCE activity in this realm or OSCE member 
states are especially welcome.

Abstracts (of no more than 300 words) should be forwarded as an e-mail 
attachment to intaffconf at ria.ie by no later than the close of business 
on Friday 20th May 2011
