Erickson and colleagues presented a paper at CHI 2011 about a conference in Second Life - see http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1979013 .

I've been to a different conference in SL and it worked pretty well I think - however it primarily attracted experienced SL users. I'm not sure whether a large group of novices would have as good an experience. -Greg
