WANTED: Assistant Professor in Strategic Communication and New Media

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is searching for an outstanding scholar to fill a new tenure-track assistant professor position in strategic communication and new media.

The selected candidate will contribute to the M.A. in Technology and Communication<http://matc.jomc.unc.edu> (MATC), an innovative online degree program launched in Fall 2011. The MATC focuses on interactive media, the Internet and digital economics, addressing issues that are reshaping mass communication in the 21st century. One of the first online M.A. programs in mass communication, it was created to offer journalists and other communication professionals an opportunity to examine changes in industry economics and technology. This new degree draws on the expertise of the school’s nationally respected faculty and their research to position students for leadership roles in digital media and Web-based communication. The selected candidate will likely teach one or two courses in the MATC program each year, as well as other courses in strategic communication.

Starting date for the appointment:
Either Jan. 1 or July 1, 2013. Review of applications will begin May 7, 2012, and will continue until the position is filled.
Educational requirements:
Successful applicants will have a Ph.D. Those who are ABD and near degree completion may be considered.

Qualifications & experience:
An established research agenda and teaching experience are preferred in the areas of strategic communication and new media. In addition, applicants should be capable of supervising graduate students’ theses and final projects. Applicants for the position must be able to teach “JOMC 720: Strategic Communication” in the MATC curriculum<http://matc.jomc.unc.edu/curriculum>. Preference will be given to candidates who are qualified to teach more than one MATC course. Applicants are asked to provide a detailed explanation of their qualifications to teach “JOMC 720: Strategic Communication,” in addition to any other courses in the MATC curriculum.  Teach two courses a semester.  Perform other customary duties of a faculty member:  research and scholarly activities, advising and service.
