Seeking Applications for Doctoral Student Fellows, School of 
Communication at American University, Washington, DC

American University invites applications for doctoral student fellows 
for the PhD Program in Communication.  The program is dedicated to 
educating the next generation of communication scholars and expert 
professionals. All students will receive full tuition remission as well 
as a generous living stipend.

The PhD program in Communication fosters scholarship that builds new 
theory and knowledge, and enhances the ability of institutions, social 
groups, and professionals to apply that knowledge to undertake salient 
political and social challenges.  Courses cover a wide spectrum of 
issues addressing the cultural, technological, economic, and policy 
forces shaping the media system, and emphasizing the role of new media 
in civil society and democracy, a theme consistent with the core public 
service mission of American university.   Students work closely with a 
faculty advisor to create an individualized program of electives. This 
interdisciplinary degree includes communication classes, as well as 
courses from other units on campus, organized around the student's 
choice of a thematic concentrations. The innovative design of this 
accelerated program enables students who enter with a research-focused 
masters degree to complete the PhD in three years.

The priority application deadline is December 15, 2012. Applications 
will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.
