The following posting can be found on CBU's website (
http://www.cbu.ca/content/assistant-professor-community-studies-0 <
http://www.cbu.ca/content/assistant-professor-community-studies-0> ). I
would be happy to respond to any questions potential candidates may have
about the position, or to direct inquiries to the appropriate person.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, COMMUNITY STUDIES

Cape Breton University (CBU) is located on Cape Breton Island, Nova
Scotia's tourism centrepiece and home to rich Celtic, Mi'kmaq, and Acadian
culture. CBU has a reputation for small class sizes, strong community
involvement, and strong internal support for faculty research.

The Department of Community Studies at CBU invites applications for a
tenure-track position in Community Studies at the rank of Assistant
Professor to commence July 2013, subject to budget approval.

Community Studies courses encourage interdisciplinary, collaborative, and
experiential learning where process and content are equally valued. A small
group format is central to our pedagogy, bringing theoretical foundations
and practical applications together to build skills in problem solving and
working for positive social change. Our goal is to help students develop
proficiency as motivated, creative community members with an understanding
of the applicability of their experiences in the larger world. This
pedagogy is foundational to the teaching and learning in Community Studies
courses that form the core of the Bachelor of Arts Community Studies
program.

The successful candidate should have a PhD although ABD candidates will be
considered. The PhD may be in any discipline; however, the School's
Academic Plan identifies areas for future growth that include: Heritage
Studies, Social Justice, and Sport & Human Kinetics. Expertise in any of
these areas would be considered an asset.

The successful candidate will have a record demonstrating university
teaching experience using a process education model where the professor
functions as an advisor and co-learner rather than a lecturer. The teaching
load may include both on campus and online courses. The successful
candidate will have an established research program. Research should focus
on issues related to community development, community based research, or
other related topics. In addition, there must be a strong commitment to
service as demonstrated through a record of community involvement within
the university, the discipline and the broader community.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate potential and commitment with regard
to teaching, research/creative/scholarly activities and service to Cape
Breton University, community and profession.

The union affiliation of this position is with the Cape Breton University
Faculty Association.

Qualified candidates should send a letter of application quoting the
reference number (COM1301), a complete dossier including curriculum vitae,
copy of academic transcripts, evidence of teaching effectiveness, a sample
of scholarly writing and three current letters of reference (sent directly
to CBU) to the Human Resources Department. Applications must be received by
4:00 p.m. November 30, 2012. Email applicants will receive a return email
confirming receipt.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply <
http://www.cbu.ca/content/assistant-professor-community-studies-0#> ;
however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
CBU is an equal opportunities employer. CBU encourages applications from
qualified Aboriginal People, African Canadians or other persons from a
visible minority group, persons with disabilities and women. Applicants who
wish to be considered for this initiative should self-identify in their
cover letter.
