Dear all,

please consider submitting an abstract to:

Digital Footprints: Capturing, Mining and Contextualizing Big Data

Call for papers

Where: IT-City, Aarhus University, Denmark

When: Thursday October 3, 2013

Who: Organized by Digital Footprints Research Group, Aarhus University
(sponsored by Netlab, DK)

Data retrieval and mining methods have become essential research tools to
understand user behavior in online services. Despite the obvious need for
such methods in order to analyze (online) communication and socialization
these algorithm/software supported methods call for further
interdisciplinary development to study for instance the communication
across different isolated tracking devices, services and networks, to more
precisely recognize behavioral and communication patterns and create
external validation, to lower the barriers for the use of algorithmic
approaches for different research fields, and to develop interdisciplinary
grounded ethical research guidelines and practices.

The aim of this seminar is two-fold: First, we encourage researchers from a
variety of fields to present research designs, ongoing work, methodological
development and findings related to online communication and socialization
and the use of software-supported/algorithmic-based methods. Secondly, we
want to support and encourage networking across disciplines for example
sociology, ethnography, philosophy, computer science, software engineering
and the humanities.

Suggestions for topics:

   - · Data tracking methods and challenges
   - · Challenges and methods for crossing data points
   - · Contextualizing big data
   - · Contextualized digital data analysis
   - · Content analysis methods and challenges
   - · Network statistics, clustering methods, or other analytical
   methods
   - · Bridging communication and computational methods
   - · Understanding big data from a communication point of view
   - · Mapping ubiquitous internet usage patterns
   - · Ethical and legal issues and practices in thick data and/or big
   data studies

Call for papers:

Abstracts (400 words): August 30, 2013

Panels and roundtable (400 words): August, 30, 2013

Demos (200 words description): August 30, 2013

Abstracts: This is a platform for presentation and discussion regarding
ongoing work and researchers should not hand in full papers before the
conference. Each presenter will have 15 minutes to present the work and 15
minutes for questions and discussion.

Panels and roundtables: We welcome proposals for panels whereby a group of
researchers discusses a predefined topic.. The panels take place as
individual presentations of 10 minutes each, followed by a 20-minute
general discussion on the topic. The roundtable format includes 5 minutes
individual presentations and a 30-minute general discussion among the
presenters and participants.

Demos: We encourage developers to present their tools related to the study
of communication and socialization online involving different (mobile) user
devices and other online user tracking tools. Each research group will have
20 minutes to present the tool and 10 minutes for discussion. Please focus
on how the tool can improve the study of online/mobile communication and
the methodological shortcomings as well.

The participation is free of charge and includes seminar participation,
lunch, and afternoon reception. Maximum of participants: 40 researchers.

Notification of acceptance: September 5, 2013

If you have any questions in relation to the seminar, possible topics or
formats please do not hesitate to send an email to: anjabechmann at gmail.com.

*The seminar will be held at the IT-City and Incuba Science Park at Aarhus
University. Incuba is an acronym for Innovation Network Centre for
University and Business of Aarhus and research fields such as Mathematical
and Applied Computer Science, IT Engineering, Information, Media and
Communication studies, and Digital Design Studies are located in the
IT-City along with companies such as Google.*

*Aarhus University (Danish: Aarhus Universitet, abbreviated** **AU) is a
public university** **located in Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark
(3 hours from Copenhagen). Founded in 1928, it is Denmark's second oldest
university and the largest, with a total of 43,600 enrolled students as of
1 January 2012,** **after a merger with Aarhus School of Engineering. A
young university with high aspirations, it belongs to the international
elite. In most prestigious ranking lists of the world´s best universities,
Aarhus University is placed in the top 100. *
