It's been years, but -- we used to have tools (metamail?) to split
digest mail up into individual messages for perusal.
Pretty sure the variant I used to use was called metamutt - a script
that ran inside mutt and knew how to present a digest as a temp folder
with threading, et cetera, so you could cruise the digest a little
more easily.
Alas, with webmail and the like, most people's direct access to this
kind of technology has disappeared.
[You can certainly still use it - say by grabbing your mail over IMAP
and then post-processing it - but the barriers to entry are much
higher than they used to be - folks are no longer accustomed to
setting up a suite of tools to handle mail, and instead want only to
use whatever lowest-common-denominator tool is handed to them....]
