Director
School of Journalism
The University of Texas at Austin
Fall 2014

As it prepares to celebrate its centennial, the School of Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin is seeking a new director, with outstanding reputation in either the professional or academic area of journalism. The director will provide vision and intellectual leadership for a program and field in transition, as journalism education adapts to these changes. Thus, a background in both the profession and experience with university life is preferred.

Graduates of the program have won 18 Pulitzer Prizes since its founding in 1914. The School has 800 undergraduates and 107 graduate students in the master's and doctoral programs. It has recently adopted a new undergraduate curriculum, emphasizing innovative multimedia skills and a forward-looking approach.

Faculty includes journalism professionals, who are expected to remain current with their work and contribute to the professional community, and more research-oriented scholars, who are encouraged to conduct research that is relevant to the profession but also to the larger democratic society. The School has a strong tradition of close relations with the profession and the research community, and seeks a director who will maintain and expand these ties.

The School is housed in a new, state-of-the-art building, the Belo Center for New Media, as part of UT’s College of Communication, the nation’s most comprehensive program of its kind, which includes top-ranked departments of Advertising & Public Relations, Radio-Television-Film, Communication Studies, and Communication Science and Disorders. The director works closely with the dean of the college on alumni relations and fundraising for the School.

The new Director will be appointed as a full professor with tenure and hold the G.B. Dealey Regents Professorship in Journalism.

Screening of applicants will begin November 1, 2013, and will continue until the position is filled. Faculty posting number: 13071000001. Applicants should provide a statement of interest in the position, a complete CV and the names and contact information of at least three references (finalists will be asked to provide three original letters of reference) to the Search Committee Chair, Prof. Rosental C.
