Texas Tech University Department of Communication Studies, Assistant Professor



The Department of Communication Studies at Texas Tech University invites applications for two full-time tenure track Assistant Professor positions’ beginning Fall, 2015.


Successful applicants will have a terminal degree in hand, preference will be given to applicants who have prior university teaching experience and demonstrate a solid understanding of the range and depth of philosophical underpinnings reflected in the department’s curriculum and scholarship as well as within the field (i.e. objective/discovery, interpretive, critical, and postmodern philosophies). Preference also will be given to candidates who can bridge research and teaching across different departmental concentrations. Applicants should have a research program capable of producing high-quality referred publications and obtaining extramural funding commensurate with the mission and strategic plan of a research-intensive university. Applicants will be expected to periodically teach undergraduate and graduate communication theory and research methods courses, the undergraduate Business and Professional Communication course, and offer appropriate service within the institution and to the profession.


Position 1: Organizational Communication: Applicants should be qualified to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in organizational communication (i.e., small group, instruction & training, interviewing, and communication in organizations). Position 2: Interpersonal Communication: Applicants should be qualified to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in interpersonal communication (i.e., relational, family, gender, and/or intercultural) and have an active research program in interpersonal communication.

The Department of Communication Studies offers B.A. and M.A. degrees with 8 tenured faculty members, approximately 150 undergraduate majors, and 20 graduate majors. The university’s Board of Regents recently approved a move of the department to become a unit of the College of Media and Communication, a change expected to be fully implemented by the end of the 2014-2015 academic year. Texas Tech is located in Lubbock, Texas, a West Texas city with a population of more than 234,000 residents (285,000 in county). A large portion of Lubbock’s economy is based on farming and ranching. Lubbock serves as the medical hub to a region consisting of increasingly Latino and aging populations, and the area offers a variety of cultural, arts, and recreational opportunities.
