FoodCHI 2014
Workshop + Symposium + Farm Tour
18 – 20 September 2014, QUT, Brisbane

Are you interested in food? Are you interested in how design and technology impacts food culture? Are you interested in a future with healthy, environmentally sustainable, and socially inclusive urban foodscapes?
If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, come and join us for FoodCHI 2014<http://foodchi.urbaninformatics.net/> hosted by Urban Informatics Research Lab<http://www.urbaninformatics.net/> at QUT in Brisbane, Australia.
FoodCHI (Food Computer-Human Interaction) brings together practitioners and academics to engage in critical discussions about how, through design, digital and networked technologies can shape future foodscapes. To inspire ideas and down-to-earth discussions, FoodCHI offers a hands-on design workshop on experimental food hacking with data, a visit to local farms to investigate the root of food culture, and stimulating dining experiences.
Thu 18 Sep 2014: Taste of Data Workshop by Markéta Dolejšová
10am – 1pm
James Street Cooking School, New Farm
Markéta Dolejšová is an artist and food researcher from the Czech Republic. She will be running the workshop based on the HotKarot & OpenSauce project<http://www.hotkarot.cz/>. In this workshop, participants will learn how to transform their personal stories into data, which is then interpreted into an edible form. Here, we taste our lives by making the ultimate prototype of shared "social stomach" representing the most profound kind of communication.
Fri 19 Sep 2014: FoodCHI Symposium
9am – 5:30pm (plus optional dinner at Eat Street Markets)
QUT Gardens Point Campus
Director of Abriculture<http://www.abriculture.com/> and indigenous leader Seth Fourmile (Gudju Gudju) will give the keynote speech. The symposium will also feature a selection of local and international academics and practitioners speaking on a diverse range of issues at the intersection of food, design, and technologies. Dale Chapman, Bush Tucker chef, will be providing tasty fare for all symposium delegates.
Sat 20 Sep 2014: Farm Tour
9am – 5pm (to be confirmed)
Visiting: Millen Farm (Samford), Pim Mens Farm (Caboolture) – transport included
On Saturday we will head back to nature and explore the root of food culture at Pim Mens Farm<http://www.foodconnect.com.au/pim-mens/> in Caboolture and Millen Farm<http://www.millenfarm.org/holding/> in Samford with Food Connect<http://www.foodconnect.com.au/about-us>. Pim Mens Farm will share their tricks and techniques for sustainable agriculture, getting down and dirty in a real-world intellectual food sustainability experience. Millen Farm is a not-for-profit community-funded organisation that is exploring sustainable organic growing techniques in urban farming. Rob Pekin, founder of Food Connect and director of the Open Food Web Foundation, will be giving a short talk on connecting the dots for a sustainable food future. An organic and locally-produced lunch will be provided in Samford by Merriweather Café<http://merriweathercafe.com/>.
