School of Journalism and Communication (Communication Studies) –
Assistant Professor (Application Closing Date: October 20, 2014)

The School of Journalism and Communication invites applications from
qualified candidates for a preliminary tenure-track appointment in
Communication Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning
July 1, 2015.

Candidates should demonstrate strong potential to be leading scholars
and effective teachers whose research interrogates the relationship
between big data, surveillance, privacy and/or ethics. Ideal
candidates may be working in a variety of areas, such as, but not
limited to: algorithmic culture, cyber-security, data mining and
scraping, analytics, digital archiving, cultures of mobility,
sousveillance practices, user generated content, and spatial and
locative media. We welcome applications from candidates exploring
critical, ethically inflected questions about big data from a
political economy, policy or cultural studies and humanities
perspective. Candidates who are committed to making policy and
regulatory interventions in the Canadian and/or international contexts
are particularly desirable, as are those who are working with civil
society organizations. The successful candidate will be expected to
participate in both undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring,
and share in the administrative duties of the School.

Communication Studies is a research-intensive unit within the School
of Journalism and Communication, offering programs of study leading to
undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA, PhD) degrees. Our approach to
both research and the teaching of communication is broad and
interdisciplinary, focusing on the critical analysis of media and
communication industries, institutions, practices, and effects.

Qualified candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Communication or a
related discipline by the date of the appointment, however outstanding
ABD candidates who are close to completion may also be considered.
Candidates should show evidence of theoretical sophistication in their
writing, possess an emerging publication record and demonstrate
potential to attract external funding, graduate students and
postdoctoral fellows. Consistent with Carleton University’s focus on
teaching excellence, the successful candidate will be committed to
developing innovative approaches to pedagogy, encouraging creative and
critical inquiry, and empowering students to become active citizens.
We expect the successful candidate to teach existing courses in our
undergraduate and graduate programs, and to develop new courses in
their area of specialization.

Candidates should prepare a zipped electronic dossier that includes: a
signed cover letter; current curriculum vitae; a statement outlining
current and future research plans; a sample graduate seminar course
syllabus in the candidate’s area of specialization; one writing
sample; and the names and contact information of 3 referees.
Candidates who are considered for an interview will be asked to
arrange for letters of reference and should advise their referees of
this possibility.

Please submit your completed application materials in a zipped folder
to Ms. Carole Craswell, Administrator, School of Journalism and
Communication <Carole.Craswell at Carleton.ca>. All documents should be
addressed to the attention of Dr. Josh Greenberg, Director, School of
Journalism and Communication, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By
Drive, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, K1S 5B6. Inquiries about the position
should be directed to Dr. Greenberg via email
<Joshua.Greenberg at Carleton.ca>. The deadline for applications is
October 20, 2014.

Please indicate in your application if you are a Canadian citizen or
permanent resident of Canada.
