We are looking for a research associate to work on a project at the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff University, starting on July 1st, working full-time for 3 months. Details below:


Job Title: Research Associate (Casual Work)

School: Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies

Duration: 3 months full-time

Salary Details: Grade 6.33 (£18.75 per hour)

Hours of work: This is a full-time position

Responsible to: Lina Dencik, Lecturer at Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies

Date of Appointment: 1st of July, 2015

Closing Date for Applications: 12 noon, Monday 22nd of June


Project: Managing 'Threats': Social media data collection and use by the National Domestic Extremism and Disorder Intelligence Unit in the UK

This project will investigate algorithmic definitions of domestic extremism and disorder, and how data analysis is used to inform the policing of potential 'threats'.


The Research Associate will be expected to:

- Organize and conduct interviews

- Carry out social media 'big data' analysis

- Organize a project workshop with key stakeholders


Experience in these three areas, and a critical understanding of social media and big data, is beneficial for this post.


The project is led by Dr Lina Dencik and Dr Arne Hintz and is funded by the Media Democracy Fund under the call 'Quantified Society'. The position is full-time from the 1st of July until the 1st of October.


The project will be based at the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC). JOMEC is a world-leading centre for teaching and research in Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.
