Inviting Participation through IoT: Experiments and Performances in Public Spaces is a one day workshop to be held August 18th at Critical Alternatives 2015, the 5th decennial Aarhus conference. See http://aarhus2015.org/
The workshop will bring together artists, designers, practitioners, and researchers interested in site-specific projects involving Internet of Things (IoT) technologies intended to explore different kinds of participation in public life.
The Internet of Things is widely understood as a system of networked objects (e.g. meters, toasters or thermostats) that sense and communicate aspects of their environment. To explore the participatory potentials of IoT, this workshop will consider the limitations and new possibilities for what currently exists. For example, simple motion-activated streetlamps in public staircases, underground walkways or other passages could enhance nighttime and early morning movement — augmenting visibility and ultimately safety. But who and what else will be affected by this increase in visibility? What are other potential uses for public technologies? How does this affect public participation?
Apply
We invite researchers/scholars and artists to submit a position paper (1 to 4 pages in the ACM Extended Abstract format), or a video contribution (max. 5 minutes) to participationiot at gmail.com. The submission may address 1) a project you’ve recently completed or in progress; 2) a critique of a project orchestrated by other individuals, a governing body, or corporation; or 3) a speculative/dream proposal for public IoT that addresses power dynamics, participation, and agency – either alone or these concepts in some combination.
We invite contributions on topics including but not limited to:
• Public participation
• IoT and public life
• Public performances
and interventions to invite participation
• Politics of public IoT
• Histories of interventions for participation
The deadline for submission is June 10th with acceptance notices being emailed to the participants by June 18th. The workshop will be held on Sunday, August 18th at Aarhus University (Denmark).
