THEORISING DIGITAL SOCIETY


UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA, 14 SEPTEMBER 2015



Drawing inspiration from the successful ‘Theorizing the Web’ conferences
held annually in the USA since 2011, this one-day symposium will present
new research that brings theoretical perspectives to bear on contemporary
digital media and other digital technologies. The keynote speaker is
Professor Susan Halford, Head of the Department of Sociology, Social Policy
and Criminology and Co-Director of the Web Science Institute, University of
Southampton, UK.


The symposium will be free of charge to all participants, but the numbers
of speakers and attendees will be limited. Please submit titles and
abstracts of up to 200 words to Professor Deborah Lupton, the symposium
convenor, by email (deborah.lupton at canberra.edu.au). The deadline for
submission is 30 June 2015.



Papers are invited that address the following topics or others related to
the theme:

-        * Software, code and platform studies

-        * Apps as artefacts

-        * Big data cultures and the digital data economy

-        * Materialisations of data

-        * Gamification and game cultures

-        * Self-tracking devices, wearable tech and the quantified self

-        * Characteristics of digital technology use and non-use

-        * Veillance/surveillance and digital technologies

-        * Embodiment, selfhood and digital technologies

-        * The Internet of Things

-        * Maker cultures

-        * Design and artistic responses to digital society

-        * Work and labour in digital society

-        * Social activism and social movements using digital technologies

-        * Gender, race/ethnicity, age, disability, sexual identity,
geographical location and social class and how these structure digital
technology use and meanings

-        * Celebrity and fandom on the internet
