The University of Bremen, a mid-sized university with 250 professorships and 19,000 students, offers a broad range of disciplines and competes internationally in top-level research. With an ambitious institutional strategy the university was successful in the Excellence Initiative as one of eleven universities in Germany.

The University of Bremen, Faculty 9 Cultural Studies invites applicants for the following two positions:

Research Associate (EG 13 TVL, 50%), for the duration of 3 years

The appointed candidates will ideally commence on 1 March 2016.

Both positions are based within the research unit “Media and Communication Studies with the Special Area Comparative Cultural Analysis“(Prof. Dr. Christine Lohmeier). Research focuses on transcultural and international communication, the intersections between media and culture, memory studies and the advancement of innovative qualitative research methods.

A critical-reflective perspective and an appreciation of concepts around mediatization are key features of our approach to research.

Tasks:

-  Teaching (2 hours per week) in the BA programme “Communication and Media Studies” and the M.A. “Media Culture” (especially in the area of qualitative methods classes)

-  Participation in the development and carrying out of research projects, including grant writing

-  Support and facilitate international relations of the department

-  Development of a PhD project in line with the research interests outlined above

Requirements:

-      Master degree in communication and media studies or a related discipline (sociology, anthropology, cultural studies)

-      Very good knowledge of qualitative research methods, ideally including ethnographic research

-      Previous experience or strong interest in the research areas outlined above

-      Excellent English language skills and ideally good command of German
