Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering, University of Washington
Tactile and Tactical Design Lab, Professor Daniela Rosner

The Tactile and Tactical Design Lab (TAT Lab) at the Department of Human
Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) at the University of Washington,
Seattle, is seeking a PhD student to begin fall 2016.
​Under an NSF-funded research fellowship, t
he PhD student will explore questions of
craft
 and materiality emerging around the integration of computing technology in
traditional
​handwork ​
practices
, from ship building to weaving​
.
​Possible p
rojects include:

   - Investigating
   ​the communicative dimensions of emerging tools for digital fabrication

   - ​Tracing the historical development of craft and DIY practices in
   modern maker cultures

   - ​
   ​Understanding the shifting dynamics between creativity, care, and
   repair in the adoption of computational technologies

   - Examining questions of gender and technical labor across sites and
   infrastructures of craftwork.

Ideal applicants have a strong background in media studies and/or science
and technology studies (STS). Experience with ethnographic methods
​​
is required. Strong candidates will have demonstrated success working
collaboratively, will have a promising publication record, and will have
​ an ​
interest
​ (or experience)​
 in
​art/design practice and ​
interventionist
​
​approaches
.
