For weeks our Facebook feeds have been filled with pictures of new school uniforms – a sure sign that a new school year has begun. Notices of parents’ evenings, new teaching loads and student requests are surely piling up… so before swinging into action why don’t you take grab a cup of tea and catch up on a few recent blog posts on parenting and technology (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/) that you might have missed?

(As always click here (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/subscribe/) to subscribe)

Over the summer we’ve been busy, with media appearances (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/08/26/recent-media-appearances/) talking about safety using devices (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/11794464/Cyber-safety-How-protected-are-your-children-online.html) while on family vacation, to the decision about whether ‘sharenting’ (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/06/17/managing-your-childs-digital-footprint-and-or-parent-bloggers-ahead-of-brit-mums-on-the-20th-of-june/) your child’s exam or school results online is appropriate, to the importance of knowing what your kids do online (http://www.channel4.com/news/half-of-parents-fear-their-children-are-addicted-to-screens) . In ON OUR MINDS (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/category/on-our-minds/) we’ve covered the publication of recent research on the importance of parents’ own education and skills
(http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/09/21/parental-education-and-digital-skills-matter-most-in-guiding-childrens-internet-use/) in managing kid’s media use and inspiring ways that parents can contribute to media literacy programmes (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/08/18/media-literacy-in-europe-inspiring-ways-to-involve-parents/) . We’ve tackled some big issues, thinking about how parents can deal with online extremism (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/07/31/online-extremism/) and the importance of parents as witnesses in the case of the Syrian refugee crisis (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/09/07/alan-kurdi-and-parents-as-witnesses/) .

In FROM OUR NOTES (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/category/from-our-notes/) we provide on-going updates from our research project on Parenting for a Digital Future. Sonia wrote about the importance of studying families from a Media Studies perspective (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/07/24/why-study-parenting-from-a-media-studies-perspective/) , and we provide on-going reviews (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/08/07/its-complicated/) of key recent literature including danah boyd’s study of teens and social media It’s Complicated (http://www.danah.org/itscomplicated/) .

Posts from guest bloggers AROUND THE WORLD (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/category/around-the-world/) continue to grow in depth and scope. We’ve learned from parents in Australia (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/08/05/parentinginbabylon/) who set up a Minecraft server as a ‘digital backyard’ and about how grandparents and grandchildren in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/09/02/grandparents-grandchildren-and-mobile-phones-in-the-democratic-republic-of-the-congo/) negotiate shared mobile phone use. Guest posters have written about the importance of making connections through social media in rural Mexico (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/08/28/big-dreams-big-numbers-facebook-rural-mexico/) , and on the process of asking young people to imagine the future in coastal England
(http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/09/11/planning-and-imagining-the-future-on-the-isle-of-sheppey/) . We’ve covered the increasing ‘mediatization’ of young people’s lives in Germany (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/09/16/young-peoples-mediatised-lives-and-communities-in-germany/) , the role of social media in maintaining gender segregation practices in Pakistan (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/07/29/around-the-world-3/) and on parents and children learning and playing together through games in Jamaica (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/2015/08/12/learning-more-than-minecraft/) .

Finally, after several requests we created a round up of key resources (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/resources/) for parents trying to untangle the digital world with their children. These are all non-commercial places to go to for advice and ideas.

We’ve got many more great posts and a number of research updates planned for the autumn, so please do subscribe (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/subscribe/) and share our blog (http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/parenting4digitalfuture/) on your own networks if you can. Get in touch if you’re interested in contributing.
