appointment in Journalism Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor. The
appointment will begin July 1, 2017.

We are interested in candidates with research strength in the critical
study of the contemporary journalism, news and journalism-related media
practices, with particular focus on the changing modes, forms, and styles
of information transmission currently taking place within, across, or
beyond traditional news media industries. Applicants are required to have a

The ideal candidate will also have a national/regional/local media focus
within their work that intersects with a wider global/transnational
perspective. Expertise in the Canadian journalism and media landscape is
preferred, but expertise in other areas is also welcome. A critical
research focus into the changing modes, practices, and narrative forms of
journalism through one or more of the following areas of expertise is
essential: specialized subfields of journalism; activist, alternative
and/or marginalized journalistic voices including feminist and
intersectional approaches; or the role of data-visualization, networked
and/or data-driven journalistic practices. The successful candidate must
demonstrate an aptitude for taking a leadership role in Journalism Studies
and a willingness to contribute to all aspects of departmental development
as required.

Candidates must demonstrate a record of excellence in research. The
successful candidate will be expected to conduct innovative research at the
highest international level and to establish an outstanding research
program. S/he will have an established or emerging record of scholarly
accomplishment including publications in leading academic journals and/or
with leading academic presses, or will provide evidence of excellence in
research as demonstrated in presentations at significant conferences,
awards for work in the field and strong endorsements by referees of high
international standing. S/he will be willing and adept at communicating the
importance of research conducted in the Department of Arts, Culture and
Media to mainstream media in Toronto and beyond.

Candidates must demonstrate a record of excellence in teaching. Excellence
in teaching can be demonstrated through strong endorsements from referees,
very strong course evaluations, a coherent statement of teaching philosophy
that is linked to excellent pedagogical practice, demonstrated excellent
performance in other teaching related activities, and teaching
accomplishments highlighted as part of the application.

The Department of Arts, Culture and Media is a unique multi-disciplinary
research and teaching environment, with programs in Art History, Arts
Management, Curatorial Studies, Journalism, Media Studies and New Media
Studies, Music and Culture, Studio, and Theatre and Performance Studies. In
addition to being a full member of the Department of Arts, Culture and
Media at the University of Toronto Scarborough, the successful candidate
will hold a graduate appointment in the Faculty of Information (iSchool), a
graduate unit at the University of Toronto. The candidate selected will be
expected to maintain a strong program of research and to articulate and
implement a vision for developing new research initiatives and
relationships that fit within this diverse context.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The appointment is at the University of Toronto Scarborough, which is a
